Family formals are very important to couple's on a wedding day. They don't want anyone to feel left out, and sometimes it's hard to get everyone in the same place at the same time. Here are some practical ways to make the most out of your Family Formals on your wedding day. I. Communication The first place to start is to communicate with your photographer and your coordinator or planner. The reason why this is so important is because they are pivotal to adhering to your wedding timeline and to give you the most out of your day. Let your wedding party know in advance that they will be a part of the family formals. II. Let Your Photographer Lead As a seasoned shooter, I know how to make the most out of your family wedding portraits. I know how important this time is so I make it my goal to get everyone in order, and to make it fun while doing it. There's almost an internal checklist (in my head) that I use to help me stay organized and to make sure I capture your beautiful family members and bridal party. It's also important to let immediate family know this as well. A good place to start is by informing the following people. - Mother of the Bride Mother of the Groom Entire wWedding Party The Maid of Honor The Best Man The Flower-girl The Ring bearer Although there are probably Aunts and Uncles that you want to have during family portraits, the people listed above are deemed as priority.
I like to start large and go small. I gradually dismiss family as I get through the group and then I end up with the Bride & Groom as the final two people in front of the camera. This strategy really works best because it allows me to have intimate time with the Bride & Groom, and it also allows the Wedding Party and immediate family members chosen to veer off to the cocktail area for food and drinks. They can also freshen up (if they really need to) before the Reception begins.
IV. Stay Close I try not to venture too far away from the main venue for two reasons. One, because traveling takes away from the shooting time allotted, and two, a seasoned shooter knows how to find light and a great place to shoot. You don't need to travel miles away from the venue to do so. i V. Keep Your Best-Man & Maid of Honor Close One of the two can help the Bride & Groom during their portrait session. The MOH can help the Bride with her dress and fix her hair if needed. Yes, I do this too, but it helps even more and allows for more time when you have a MOH to help. The Best-man can help with the Groom to make sure if he's sweating that he has a rag to wipe off sweat and sometimes it's cool to just have a guy cheering you on and telling you how great you and your beau look.
